Day 17 - I woke up like this (sniffly)
Copenhagen, Denmark
-
I think the crisp and cold Copenhagen air has finally hit me - I’ve woken up with a case of the sniffles and a need to hit my 6:30am snooze button for a later start that gets me packed and checked-out just in time for the hotel’s 11am deadline. It’s my last day before heading to Barcelona for the Easter weekend and there’s one thing for certain; I am not letting this health-hiccup hinder my final few hours of exploration any longer.
I load up on all the things from the hotel lobby that will convince myself that I’m A-OK to venture out; an orange juice, fruit salad and a roast vegetable sandwich, all followed with a nice pairing of echinacea and multivitamins for an added placebo effect.
There are two final locations I’m keen to hit before boarding my evening plane; the Dansk Arkitektur Center and Copenhagen’s favourite female, The Little Mermaid. I jumped on a train from Vestaport and made my way closer to the harbour for a sighting of the small yet bold bronze statue perched delicately on one of the granite boulders edging the shoreline between the industrial docks and picturesque parklands of Larsen Plads. Almond and Cherry blossoms are poppin’ this time of year!
Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale - although not as light-hearted as the Disney interpretation - has made for one popular inanimate mermaid. Swarmed by lovers of the old story and an abundance of tourists, the sight accompanied by the mid-autumn sun made for a calming and reflective moment of poise. After a little over a week of experiencing all the wonder that Copenhagen has had to offer, a moment of perching on the shoreline just like my new mate Ariel felt a poetic farewell to both a city I love and its spirit embodied in bronze. I can promise you that I’ll be back.
